MHSD PhD students attend the Music4Change International Research School 2025 in Thessaloniki

This September, PhD students Anna Bryan, Ziyang Cao, Jenny England, Lucy Forde, Deniz Hepdogan and Yvonne Wyroslawska gave presentations at the Music4Change International Research School 2025 in Thessaloniki, Greece, while Prof Katie Overy and Prof Peter Nelson (Emeritus) participated as a panelists on Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation in Musical Learning Contexts, and Prof Raymond MacDonald contributed to the panel on Making a Musical Difference. Prof Overy also supported the event as a member of the organising committee, helping to shape the programme and ensure a welcoming and collaborative environment for all attendees.

20-minute presentations along with 10-minute discussions showcased our members’ diverse areas of research:

  • Anna Bryan: “It’s a Wee Bit of a Juggling Act”: what factors influence how activities coordinators use music in Scottish care homes?
  • Ziyang Cao: Can singing help beginner-level mandarin speakers learn a Chinese classical poem?
  • Jennifer England: Music, Mimesis and Movement: a re-thinking of mimesis to support creative expression and relational connection for people living with dementia
  • Lucy Forde: Collaborative Futures: insights from the Music and Dementia Care Network
  • Deniz Hepdogan: Music Listening in Care Homes: towards a novel music listening device
  • Yvonne Wyroslawska: Can singing with mothers and babies during the postnatal period have a positive impact on maternal mental health and wellbeing?

These involvements represent the diversity of research within the MHSD, and commitment to fostering international collaboration and supporting interdisciplinary dialogue.
