Biography
Emma currently works as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, based in the Reid School of Music. She is working with Dr Katie Overy on a project funded by an ESRC Impact Grant that aims to provide resources and training to enable teachers to use a specially designed musical activities programme to support literacy skills in children with dyslexia. Emma completed her PhD in October 2018, under the supervision of Dr Katie Overy (Reid School of Music), Prof Holly Branigan (Department of Psychology) and Dr Mark Bastin (Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences). Her research was supported by a Thomas Laing Reilly PhD Scholarship in Music, an Innovation Initiative Grant from the University of Edinburgh Development Trust and a grant from the Moray Endowment Fund.
Research Interests
Emma is interested in the potential of music to support movement and language learning as well as well as the impact of music on brain structure, which she explores using diffusion tensor MRI. Emma’s research is currently focused on music and dyslexia, specifically whether specially designed classroom musical activities can support literacy skills in children with dyslexia and the neural mechanisms behind this support. She has previously collaborated with Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital to collect data for a study investigating syllable discrimination in adults with dyslexia. Emma has also conducted research investigating the potential of musical cues to support movement learning and changes in auditory-motor connectivity.
