Music and Dementia Care Network

The Music and Dementia Care Network is an international collaboration connecting researchers and practitioners across the UK and Canada. Founded by the University of Edinburgh, the University of Toronto, and Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, the network aims to advance understanding of how music can support people living with dementia and enhance care practices.

Through knowledge-sharing initiatives, the network fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, bringing together expertise from different fields including music, gerontology, neuroscience, music psychology, music therapy, design, and music technology. Supported by the Advanced Care Research Centre (ACRC) and AGE-WELL, Canada, the network provides a platform for generating innovative approaches to dementia care through mapping directions for future research and driving progress in the development of Music-Based Interventions (MBIs).

In April 2025, hosted locally by the Music in Human and Social Development Research Group, the network’s interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Edinburgh brought together researchers and practitioners to explore new directions and share diverse perspectives in music and dementia care.
